You can sell some or all of a single instrument directly from your Pie. The sale only affects that Pie's holding of the instrument, and the money from the sale stays in the Pie as Pie Cash.
How to sell an instrument from my Pie?
- Open your Pie and go to the Holdings tab.
- Tap the instrument you want to sell.
- Tap Sell.
- Enter the amount you want to sell, or tap 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% to fill in that share of your holding's current value.
- Tap Review sell order and check the details. The Pie row shows which Pie you're selling from.
- Tap Send sell order, then OK to go back to your Pie.
📄 Note
The most you can sell is what this Pie holds of the instrument. If you hold the same instrument in another Pie or outside your Pies, those shares aren't affected.
How do I sell all of my shares?
Tap 100%. This sells all of the Pie's shares in that instrument, so no fraction is left behind.
If you enter an amount that's 95% or more of the holding's value, Review sell order is disabled and you'll see the Sell 100% option instead. You can either lower the amount or sell 100%.
The value shown is an estimate (marked with ~). The amount you receive depends on the price when the order executes.
When will my order be executed?
Sales from a Pie are market orders and are executed during regular market hours. If the market is closed, your order is queued and executed after the market opens. You'll get a notification once the sale is complete.
While the sell is in progress, you can't start another action on that Pie (such as another sell, an investment, a withdrawal or a rebalance) until it is completed.
What happens to the money from the sale?
The proceeds are added to your Pie's cash once the order is executed. They stay in the Pie and are used the next time you invest in it, whether by AutoInvest, a manual investment or a rebalance.
If you want the money in your account's free cash instead, use Withdraw on the Pie. Pie Cash is always used first before any investments are sold.
Does selling change my Pie's target weights?
No. The instrument keeps its existing target, and the confirmation screen after the sale reminds you of this.
Because the target hasn't changed, future investments into the Pie, including AutoInvest, could buy the instrument back towards its target. If you don't want that, go to Edit pie and lower its target or remove it from the Pie. See Editing a Pie & Adding/Removing slices and How do I remove an instrument from my Pie?
Can I sell an instrument in the Removed from pie section?
Yes. Tap it on the Holdings tab and choose Sell, as above. These instruments no longer have a target, so future investments into the Pie, including AutoInvest, will not buy them back. If you sell all of the shares, the instrument leaves the Removed from pie section. If you choose to sell only some of your shares, the remaining shares stay there.
Can I sell the only instrument in my Pie?
Yes, including all of it. Your Pie will then hold only Pie Cash. The instrument keeps its target, so your next investment into the Pie will buy it again.
Why can't I see a Sell option for an instrument?
If the Pie holds no shares of that instrument, there's nothing to sell, so tapping it opens the instrument's page instead.
Can I choose a number of shares or use a limit order?
No. Selling from a Pie uses market orders, and you enter the amount as a value in your account currency. To sell all your shares, use Sell 100%.
Are there any fees?
When selling from a pie, fees are the same as any other market sell order. If the instrument is priced in a different currency from your account, an FX fee applies. You'll see all costs on the review screen before you send the order.
📄 Note
When selling shares, the result of the position is realised and determined by the average price of the whole investment across your account. Because this is a sale, it may have tax implications.
Can I cancel a sell order?
Yes, while it's still pending. See How to cancel an Investing (Manual/AutoInvest), Selling, or Rebalancing order? If you cancel, the instrument keeps its shares and its target.
What's the difference between Sell, Withdraw and Export?
| What it does | Where the money or shares go | |
|---|---|---|
| Sell | Sells some or all of one instrument | Pie Cash, inside the same Pie |
| Withdraw | Sells across your Pie's holdings for the amount you choose | Your account's free cash |
| Export | Moves shares out of the Pie without selling them | Your investments, as standalone positions |
