When you remove an instrument from a Pie, it leaves the Pie's allocation completely. If the slice still holds shares, you'll be asked to decide what happens to them before your changes are saved - either rebalance your Pie to sell them, or move them out to your investments.
How to remove an instrument?
To remove an instrument from your Pie:
- Open your Pie, go to Holdings tab and tap Edit pie.
- Tap Remove to switch the instrument list into removal mode.
- Tap the ✕ next to the instrument you want to remove. You can remove more than one instrument in the same edit.
- Tap Done, then adjust the target weights of your remaining slices so they total 100%. You can use Auto-balance to 100% to spread the freed weight across the remaining slices based on their existing weights.
- Tap Confirm to save your changes. The Confirm button stays disabled until your slices total 100%, and there's at least one instrument left in the Pie.
📄 Note
You can't set the target of a slice directly to 0% to remove it. Use the Remove button - this is the only way to take an instrument out of a Pie on the Edit pie screen.
What happens next?
What happens after you tap Confirm depends on whether the instruments you removed were still holding any shares.
If the slice held no shares
If the instruments you removed didn't hold any shares, they disappear from your Pie right away. There's nothing else for you to do.
If the slice still held shares
If any of the instruments you removed still held shares, you'll see a Confirm your Pie changes screen with two options. Your changes aren't saved until you pick one:
- Rebalance my pie - we'll sell the shares of the removed instrument(s) and spread the proceeds across the remaining slices, based on your new targets.
- Move to my investments - we'll take the shares of the removed instrument(s) out of the Pie and hold them in your investments as standalone positions.
Rebalance my pie
If you choose Rebalance my pie, we'll take you straight into the rebalance flow, where you'll see a summary of the buys and sells needed to bring your Pie back to your new target weights.
Once you confirm, we place market orders to sell the shares of the removed instrument. If the market is closed at that time, the orders will queue and execute when the market next opens. The proceeds are then used to buy more of your remaining slices.
Because Rebalance my pie involves a sale, it may have tax implications — unlike Move to my investments, which moves your shares out of the Pie without selling them. FX fees may also apply, depending on the instrument's currency.
📄 Note
In some cases - usually when the removed slice was very small - the calculated buys and sells may all fall below the minimum order value. When this happens, the rebalance won't run, and your changes will still be saved, but the removed instrument will keep its shares. You can rebalance again later or move the shares to your investments. If you want to sell the position, you can do so once the instrument has been moved to your investments.
Move to my investments
If you choose Move to my investments, we'll save your new targets and export the shares of the removed instrument(s) to your investments, where they'll appear as standalone positions.
❗️ Important
If the export can't be completed for any reason, your new targets are still saved, but the shares will stay in the Pie. You can then either use Export investments to move them out or rebalance your Pie to sell them.
What if I change my mind?
You have several safe exits along the way:
- Back out of Edit pie without tapping Confirm - nothing is removed, and any target changes are discarded.
- On the Confirm your Pie changes screen, tap Back to return to Edit pie with your changes still in progress. Leaving the screen without choosing an option cancels the whole edit, and your Pie stays exactly as it was.
- If you tap Rebalance and then cancel the rebalance itself, your new targets are saved, but the removed instrument keeps its shares and is shown in the Removed from pie section of your Pie until you rebalance or export it.
