We are gradually rolling out this feature to an increasing number of users.
The Invest order screen has been redesigned to make it easier to choose an order type, size your order, set target prices and understand what is available to trade. The update applies to Invest, Stocks ISA and SIPP accounts where available. The main changes include:
- A cleaner layout with the account and order type selectors at the top.
- Clear Value and Number of shares labels. On market orders, use the arrows beside the input to switch between them.
- Quick-size buttons for Buy and Sell orders.
- A dedicated price screen for Limit, Stop and Stop-Limit orders.
- Available shares are shown on Sell orders, with more detail when part of a position cannot currently be sold.
- Clearer inline warnings and messages before you review the order.
- Extended hours or 24/5 controls remain on the order screen for supported instruments.
📄 Note
The screen now starts with 0 rather than with pre-filled values. Your order is still submitted only after you review and confirm it. Available controls may vary by account, instrument and market status.
How do the quick-size buttons work?
The buttons depend on what you are entering:
| Where | Buttons | What they use |
|---|---|---|
| Buy order | Incremental amounts and MAX | Amounts are shown based on the cash available in the chosen wallet when the screen opens. MAX uses the highest amount available for that order, subject to instrument and order limits. |
| Sell order | 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% | The percentage is calculated from the shares currently available to sell. 100% selects the full available quantity. |
| Target price | Percentage shortcuts | A Limit or Stop price is calculated relative to the current or last available price. You can also enter the price manually. |
How do I place a market order?
- Select the account and choose Market order.
- Enter a Value or Number of shares. Use the arrows beside the input to switch modes, or select a quick-size button.
- Select the wallet if you want to use another available currency.
- Tap Review Buy order or Review Sell order, check the details and confirm the order.
🤓 Tip
The estimated value or number of shares is shown below your input. The ~ symbol means the figure is indicative and can change with the market price, currency conversion and applicable charges.
How do Limit, Stop and Stop-Limit orders work?
When you switch to Limit, Stop or Stop-Limit, a separate screen opens so you can set the required target price. You can enter the price directly or as a percentage, and use the available shortcuts.
- For a Stop-Limit order, set the Stop price first and then the Limit price. Tap Save to return to the order screen. The saved price and expiration are shown in the order details section.
- If the order screen opens with a previously used pending order type, tap Set price to open the target-price screen. The Review order button remains unavailable until all required prices are entered.
- Some warnings explain that an order may execute immediately and still allow you to continue. If a target price is outside the permitted range, the screen shows the allowed boundary and prevents the price from being saved.
- Target prices and the selected expiration are kept while the order screen remains open. They reset when you close it. The default expiration is Never.
📄 Note
A Limit order shows the target price and expiration on the main order screen.
Why are some shares unavailable to sell?
The Available figure is based on shares that can be sold at that moment. Shares reserved for pending orders, pending transfers, bonus shares or other restrictions are excluded. When an info icon appears, tap it to see the breakdown.
Sell percentage buttons use the available quantity, not the total position. This means 100% may be less than your full holding when some shares are unavailable.
Why did the screen open on a different order type?
The order screen remembers the last submitted order type for Buy and Sell separately. Live and Practice accounts keep separate preferences. If no preference is available, the screen opens on a Market order in Value mode. If a remembered order type is not available for the selected instrument, a market order is shown instead.
Will every order screen look the same?
Not necessarily. Available controls can vary by account type, instrument, wallet, market status, trading hours and eligibility. The layout shown in this article may therefore differ from the one in your account.
