To continue to access eligible Crypto ETNs, you need a current Restricted Investor statement. It is valid for 12 months and takes only a few moments to reconfirm.
If you have already completed the Crypto ETN approval process, you will not need to repeat the knowledge and experience check or the 24-hour reflection period.
An expired statement does not affect your existing Crypto ETN holdings.
What is a Restricted Investor statement?
Under Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules, Crypto ETNs are high-risk investments and are subject to additional investor protections. By confirming the statement, you declare that:
- in the past 12 months, you have invested less than 10% of your net assets in high-risk investments.
- in the next 12 months, you intend to invest less than 10% of your net assets in high-risk investments.
❗️ Important
Only confirm the statement if both declarations are true for you.
What counts as net assets?
For the purposes of this statement, your net assets do not include:
- your home, meaning your primary residence;
- your pension, including any pension withdrawals; or
- any rights under qualifying contracts of insurance.
Which investments are considered high-risk?
High-risk investments are::
- peer-to-peer (P2P) loans;
- investment-based crowdfunding;
- units in a long-term asset fund;
- cryptoassets, such as Bitcoin;
- Crypto ETNs; and
- unlisted debt and equity, such as investments in companies not listed on a stock exchange.
Why do I need to confirm it again?
The Restricted Investor statement expires after 12 months. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) requires a current statement before you can buy Crypto ETNs. Reconfirming starts a new 12-month period from the moment you confirm.
How will I know that I need to update?
As the end of your 12-month period approaches, we'll let you know in a few ways:
- We'll email you ahead of the expiry date to remind you to reconfirm in good time.
- When you sign in to the app before expiry, a pop-up will appear inviting you to reconfirm your statement.
If your statement does expire before you reconfirm, you'll see the reconfirmation screen the next time you try to open a new Crypto ETN position. You won't be able to place the order until you've reconfirmed.
📄 Note
Keep the Trading 212 app updated to see and complete the reconfirmation flow.
How do I reconfirm?
- Before it expires: when you sign in to the app, a pop-up will appear. Tick the boxes to confirm your statement and select Confirm. Your 12-month period restarts straight away, and nothing about your access changes.
- After it expires: the reconfirmation screen appears when you tap Buy on a Crypto ETN (or when you try to set up or resume a Pie or AutoInvest that includes one). Tick the boxes, select Confirm, and you can carry straight on with what you were doing.
Either way, reconfirming takes less than a minute and restarts your 12-month period from that moment.
What happens if my statement expires?
Until you reconfirm, the following restrictions apply:
- New purchases: You cannot place new Crypto ETN buy orders or increase your Crypto ETN exposure.
- Pending buy orders: Any pending Crypto ETN buy order, including any unfilled part of a partially filled order, is cancelled. Pending sell orders are not affected.
- Pies and AutoInvest: Only the Crypto ETN part of a contribution or rebalance is skipped. Other eligible investments continue as normal, and the cash intended for the Crypto ETN remains uninvested in your account. A rebalance that reduces or sells an existing Crypto ETN can still continue.
- Existing holdings: Your Crypto ETNs remain fully visible. You can continue to hold, sell or reduce them at any time.
What if I close the reminder without confirming?
You can close the reminder and return to it later. Closing it does not renew your statement. If the statement expires before you confirm, the restrictions above apply until you complete the reconfirmation.
What happens after I reconfirm?
It depends on whether you reconfirmed before or after your statement expired.
- If you reconfirmed before expiry: nothing changes. Your access continues exactly as before, and your 12-month period simply restarts from the day you reconfirmed. There's no interruption to your Crypto ETNs, your buy orders, or your Pies and AutoInvest.
- If you reconfirmed after expiry: your access is restored straight away. You can place new Crypto ETN buy orders again, and any Pie or AutoInvest contributions to Crypto ETNs resume on their next scheduled run. One thing to note: any pending buy orders that were cancelled when your statement expired won't come back automatically, you'll need to place them again if you still want them.
What if my Crypto ETN approval is incomplete?
If you started the Crypto ETN approval process but did not complete it, you will not receive reminders about your statement expiring. If the statement has expired when you return, you will be asked to reconfirm it and complete only the steps that are still outstanding. Any steps you have already completed will not need to be repeated. You can access Crypto ETNs once the full approval process is complete.
❗️ Important
Only confirm if the declarations are true for you. If you are unsure, consider seeking independent professional advice. Crypto ETNs are high-risk investments, and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong. When investing, your capital is at risk, and you could lose all the money you invest.
