The National Client Identifier (NCI) is a unique combination of numbers and letters, that every person who performs trades within a financial institution, such as Trading 212, needs to be identified with.
How do I find my National Client Identifier?
In most cases, your NCI will be included in your personal Identity document (e.g. identity card or passport).
The NCI differs based on your nationality. For example, in the UK, the NCI is the National Insurance Number (NIN), whereas in the Netherlands, this is the passport number.
Why does Trading 212 need to confirm my nationality?
As a European-based broker offering financial services, we're obliged to comply with the MiFIR regulation related to reporting trading shares and other market-listed instruments. The NCI is used for this.
What happens if my nationality is not confirmed?
Your account will be set to Close-only/Sell-only mode, preventing you from opening new positions until you present your NCI. If you don't provide it for a while, further restrictions may follow.
