As part of setting up your Trading 212 account, you’ll be asked to confirm your personal and tax details after your identity details have been verified. We collect this information so we can meet tax reporting obligations that may apply to your account.
This article explains what you need to do and what information you’ll need to provide.
What are CRS and DAC7?
CRS (Common Reporting Standard) and DAC7 are international rules designed to help tax authorities prevent tax evasion.
CRS is an international framework developed by the OECD that requires financial institutions to identify and report the tax residency of their account holders. Over 100 countries participate in CRS, which enables tax authorities worldwide to exchange account information automatically and ensure tax compliance across borders.
DAC7 is a similar rule that extends tax reporting obligations to digital platforms and investment service providers. It requires firms like Trading 212 to collect and report certain information about their clients — including tax residency, Tax Identification Numbers, and national identifiers — to the relevant EU tax authorities.
Because of these rules, we’re required to confirm your tax residency and provide your TIN or national identifier as part of the process.
How the process works?
After you verify your identity (by uploading an ID document and taking a selfie), Trading 212 will ask you to review and confirm a few details before your account is activated.
Some of this information may already be filled in based on your identity document. If so, please check it carefully and correct anything that is not right.
📄 Note
In some cases, we may need to report your tax residency details to the relevant authority under applicable tax rules, such as CRS or DAC7.
Step 1: Confirm your personal details
Once your identity verification is complete, you’ll see a Confirm personal details screen. The following fields will be displayed:
- Full name: taken from your ID document. Tap to review or correct if needed.
- Date of birth: taken from your ID document. In some cases, this field may be locked if successfully read from your document.
- Nationality: taken from your document. You can update it if it’s incorrect.
- Additional nationality: if you hold more than one nationality, you can add another one here.
Please check the information carefully and tap Confirm details to continue.
Step 2: Confirm your tax residency
Next, you’ll be asked to confirm the country where you are a tax resident. This is usually the country where you live and pay taxes.
Your tax residency country may be pre-selected based on your document. If it’s incorrect, use the search bar to find and select the correct country.
If you are a tax resident in more than one country, you can add another tax residence on the next screen by tapping Add tax residence.
Step 3: Enter your Tax ID or National Insurance Number
You’ll then be asked to enter your Tax Identification Number (TIN) or the equivalent national identifier used in your country.
The name and format will depend on your country of tax residence. For example:
- United Kingdom: National Insurance Number (e.g., AB123456C)
- Germany: Steueridentifikationsnummer (11-digit number)
- France: Numéro fiscal de référence (13-digit number)
- Spain: Número de Identificación Fiscal / NIF
- Australia: Tax File Number (TFN). Note: It is not compulsory to provide your TFN however, if you choose not to provide your TFN, a TFN WHT rate of 47% will be applied on the additional income (interest on cash and dividends) you earn in your Trading 212 account. Please see ‘How is my income taxed as an Australian resident?’ for more information.
In some cases, this number may be pre-filled from your identity document. Simply check it and tap Continue if it is correct.
Step 4: Review and confirm your tax details
You’ll then see a summary screen showing your tax residence and national identifier together. On this screen, you can also:
- Add an additional tax residency if you pay taxes in more than one country (up to two residences supported).
- Confirm whether you are a US person (US citizen, resident, or tax obligor), if this applies to you.
Tap Confirm details to finish. Your account setup will then continue with the remaining steps.
Why am I being asked for this information?
Trading 212 is required to collect tax residency and tax identification information for accounts that may be subject to tax reporting rules. This helps us meet obligations that apply under local taxation laws as well as international reporting frameworks such as CRS and DAC7.
Why is some of my information already filled in?
To save you time, we may pre-fill some details - such as your name, date of birth, and nationality - from the identity document you provide during verification.
You’ll always have the chance to review and correct this information before you confirm.
What if my date of birth is locked and incorrect?
If your date of birth was successfully read from your ID document, it appears as a locked field to prevent accidental changes. If the information is incorrect, please contact our support team, and we’ll assist you.
I don’t know my Tax Identification Number (TIN). Where can I find it?
Your TIN is usually found on official tax correspondence, payslips, or your national tax authority’s website.
In the UK, your National Insurance Number appears on your payslip or letters from HMRC.
If you’re unsure, check with your local tax authority.
I am a tax resident in more than two countries. What should I do?
During account setup, you can add up to two tax residences. If you are a tax resident in more than two countries, please add the two primary ones during setup and contact our support team afterwards to add any additional residences.
What does “I am a US person” mean?
A US person includes US citizens, US residents (green card holders), and individuals with US tax obligations. If any of these apply to you, turn on this option so we can meet our reporting requirements.
Can I change my tax details after account setup?
Yes. If your tax residency or personal details change, you are required to notify Trading 212 within 30 days. You can update your details through the app or by contacting support.
Is my data safe?
We store your information securely and protect it in line with applicable data protection laws. Your data is only shared with the relevant tax authorities where reporting obligations apply.
