A Power of Attorney is a legal arrangement that lets you - the donor - appoint someone you trust to act on your behalf. The exact rules depend on the type of document and where it was registered, but in every case, it sits between you and the person you choose.
If you’d like to register one on your Trading 212 account, you can submit the document and the attorney’s details by email - we’ll review them, and once approved, your attorney will be authorised to act on your behalf.
The sections below explain how to submit a request, what documents we accept, what happens after we receive it, and the options available to the attorney after.
How do I submit a Power of Attorney request?
Send an email directly to info@trading212.com with the subject Power of Attorney Request.
Please include the following:
- The Power of Attorney document - a clear scan or photo.
- Attorney’s details - the attorney’s full name, residential address, and contact details.
- LPA access code - if your document is a Lasting Power of Attorney registered with the Office of the Public Guardian.
What documents do you accept?
For UK SIPP accounts, we accept:
- Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) - Property and Financial Affairs.
- Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) - if it was made before 1 October 2007.
- Continuing Power of Attorney (Scotland) - covering financial affairs.
- Court of Protection Order - or a Scottish equivalent appointing a Deputy or Guardian
❗️ Important
The document must cover financial affairs to be valid for use on a Trading 212 account. Documents that cover health and welfare only are not enough on their own.
What happens after I submit my request?
We’ll send you an acknowledgement email confirming that we’ve received your request. Our team will then review the document and the attorney’s details, and may come back to you if anything is missing or unclear. Once everything has been checked and approved, we’ll email you to confirm.
While the review is in progress, there’s nothing else you need to do. Your account continues to work as normal.
📄 Note
A Power of Attorney only applies while the donor is alive but unable to manage their own affairs. It does not cover what happens after the donor passes away - bereavement is handled through a separate process by an executor or personal representative under the donor's will or probate. If you need to notify us of a bereavement, please contact our support team, and we'll guide you through the process.
My Power of Attorney was approved - what happens next?
If you can still manage your account, nothing changes on a day-to-day basis. We simply have the attorney’s details on file, ready to act if and when the Power of Attorney needs to be used.
If the donor is no longer able to act, the attorney can then contact our support team to request what the Power of Attorney covers - for example, closure of the donor’s account. The attorney doesn’t get a separate Trading 212 login; everything is handled by support on the donor’s account.
I’m the attorney - how do I request an account closure?
Email info@trading212.com from your own email address and let us know you’re requesting the closure of the donor’s Trading 212 account on the basis of an approved Power of Attorney. Include:
- The donor’s full name and Trading 212 account email.
- Your own full name and contact details, so we can verify it’s you.
- A copy of the Power of Attorney document - only if it has changed since we approved it.
- Bank account for the funds - normally the donor’s account that was used to deposit funds.
Once we review the provided information, we’ll close the donor’s account and confirm by email.
❗️ Important
If the donor has an active SIPP, please initiate the transfer with the new provider before contacting us about closing the account. Without a completed transfer, we cannot proceed with closure.
📄 Note
The Power of Attorney process is currently available for UK SIPP accounts only.
