The Two-factor authentication is a mandatory extra layer of security in your Trading 212 account. You can set up a 2FA via two different methods.
Trusted device
A trusted device is one that you’ve personally recognised and approved via the app. When you log in from a new device, the Trading 212 app will send a notification to your trusted device. Tapping this notification will reveal a one-time security code that you must enter on the new device to complete the login on your new device. There’s no need for additional downloads or setup—the code is delivered directly within the app on your trusted device.
How do I trust a device?
When you log in from a new device, we will ask if you want to make it a trusted one. If you select “Trust this device”, you will need to verify your identity and provide a motion selfie - this process takes just a few moments.
📄 Note
If you are logging in for the first time without having a trusted device, you will be required to provide a motion selfie to verify that it’s you who is trying to access the account or register a new trusted device.
What are the benefits of trusted devices?
- You are in control of all logins from new devices.
- Faster login - you are not asked to provide security codes when logging in from a trusted device.
- Enhanced security - when you try to withdraw funds, access your account information, or use your 212 cards on a new device, you can control these actions from your trusted device.
- No need to download any third-party apps.
Can I trust more than one device?
Yes, you can mark multiple devices as trusted. However, be mindful of which devices you trust, and regularly review your trusted device list.
📄 Note
Marking a new device as trusted always requires the verification of a motion selfie.
What happens if I don’t trust a device?
You'll always be asked to provide a security code from your trusted device when logging in or trying to perform an action in your account, protected by 2-factor authentication.
What should I do if I don’t recognize a trusted device?
You should log out from it immediately:
- Go to your More screen → Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security and then Devices.
- Tap on the device you’re not recognising and select Log out.
- Also, select Forget this device to ensure no further login attempts are made from this device.
📄 Note
When you can’t recognise a device in the app, it’s also recommended to change your account password as a security precaution.
How can I remove or manage trusted devices?
Here’s how you can do so:
- Go to Menu
- Select Privacy & Security, then Devices
- Select the desired device and log out from it
- Check Forget this device to ensure that further attempts to log in from this device will require explicit verification
Is it safe to mark a public or shared device as trusted?
No, it’s not recommended. Public or shared devices can be less secure and might compromise your account’s safety.
Where will I receive the one-time password?
IIt will be sent to your trusted device. If you have multiple added, all of them will receive the code.
What if I lose my trusted device?
You need to register a new one and mark it as trusted.
- Log in from the new device. You will be asked for a security code.
- Since the old device is lost, select Lost access to your trusted device.
- Authenticate yourself via a motion selfie.
- When asked, select Trust this device.
- Follow the steps to log out from your lost device in Settings → Privacy & Security → Devices.
Authenticator app
When this type of authentication is enabled, and you log in, you will be asked to enter a six-digit authentication code generated by a two-factor authentication app.
How can I enable it?
- Go to the Menu tab → Settings
- Privacy & Security
- Two-factor authentication → “Trusted device” should be selected as the default option.
- Select “Authenticator app verification” and verify a motion selfie.
- Download a two-factor authentication app (e.g. Google Authenticator or Authy).
- Copy your key from the Trading 212 app and paste it in the authentication app to set it up.
- Generate a one-time code from the auth app and paste in the Trading 212 app.
- When successfully activated, copy and store your backup code. ⚠️
- Your Trading 212 app now uses “Authenticator app” as a desired method for login.
How do I reset the 2FA?
- Go to your Menu tab
- Settings
- Privacy & Security
- Two-factor authentication > Authenticator app verification
- Choose Reset 2FA
- Enter the backup code
- Set up your new 2FA
📄 Note
If you have forgotten your backup code, tap on Verify it’s you to provide and verify a motion selfie.
What's the difference between an authentication and a backup code?
- The authentication code is generated by an app separate from Trading 212. You copy the code from this app and paste it into Trading 212 in order to log in.
- The backup code is a one-time code, generated by Trading 212. If you lose access to your authenticator app, you can use the backup code to log in.
How do I log in with my backup code?
In the Authenticator app verification screen, select the "Lost access to your authenticator?" button and paste your backup code. You will then see a new backup code that can be used to log in. Make sure to save it.
What if I lose access to my authenticator app?
Next time you log in, select "Lost access to your authenticator?" and paste your backup code. You will then see a new backup code that can be used to log in. Make sure to save it.
What can I do if I forget my backup code?
Select Lost access to your authenticator and then click "Verify it is you". You will be asked to provide and verify a motion selfie, after which you will be able to reset your 2FA.
