Most, but not all, stocks can be held or traded in an ISA account. For a stock to be available for trading in an ISA, it needs to meet HMRC’s qualifying requirements. For example, trading with some ADR (American Depository Receipts) stocks may not be available from your ISA account.
Some stocks are not ISA-eligible to start with. Others can stop being eligible for ISAs if they no longer meet the qualifying criteria. A common example of ineligible investments are stocks that are downlisted to the OTC Markets exchange and, as a result, are no longer listed on an HMRC-recognised exchange.
If you hold shares that no longer qualify for your ISA account, you will be notified of this change via email and in-app notification. Typically, you will be able to hold or sell your shares up to a specific deadline, after which they will be automatically sold by our system. In doing so, the proceeds from this sale can remain in the Stocks and Shares ISA.
